What AUKUS Pillar 2 contracts mean for Australian defence AI

Defence awarded $6.2 million to three Australian companies on 10 July as part of the 2025 AUKUS Maritime Innovation Challenge. The winners: BAE Systems Australia, L3Harris Integrated Mission Systems Australia, and Mission Systems. The contracts are managed by the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) and focus on undersea communications and the control of autonomous systems.

$6.2 million split three ways is seed funding, not a production contract. What the challenge is building toward matters more: interoperable command and control for uncrewed undersea vehicles (UVs) across AUKUS partners.

Major General Hugh Meggitt, Head of ASCA, described the work as developing “interoperable systems that translate innovation into real-world maritime capability” that will “strengthen the effectiveness, resilience, and reach of uncrewed undersea operations across the Indo-Pacific.”

Specific capabilities under development include communication systems between undersea vehicles and command and control battle management systems, plus navigational data for UVs. Contracts require technology demonstrations by the end of 2026.

Why this matters beyond submarines

The undersea focus obscures a broader signal. The AUKUS Pillar II Signature Project is building a common architecture for autonomous systems across three nations. That means shared communication protocols and data formats across three nations. When the US, UK, and Australia can plug their uncrewed systems into the same control layer, the number of platforms that need to talk to each other multiplies.

This is really an edge computing and RF problem. Undersea vehicles cannot rely on satellite links or cloud processing. They need onboard inference, local decision-making, and communication backhaul that works in an environment where radio propagation is severely constrained. The capabilities being developed for UV interoperability are the same class of problem as mesh networking in austere terrestrial environments: low-bandwidth, high-latency, disconnected operations where the edge device has to act independently.

For Australian defence companies working on edge AI, RF communications, or autonomous systems, this challenge signals where the procurement pipeline is heading. The AUKUS Innovation Challenge Series (first held in 2024) is explicitly designed to connect governments with industry to accelerate capability delivery. Companies that can demonstrate working interoperability with allied systems are better positioned for the production contracts that follow.

The gap nobody is talking about

Technology demonstrations are due by the end of 2026. Five months. The challenge specified “innovative offerings from Australian industry,” which suggests ASCA is looking for companies that already have something working, not those starting from scratch.

The question is whether the Australian industrial base can deliver production-ready autonomous systems interoperability on that timeline. BAE Systems Australia has the defence pedigree but is not known for rapid iteration. L3Harris has the comms expertise. Mission Systems is the smallest of the three and the least publicly documented.

If the demonstrations succeed, the next step is production funding. If they do not, the AUKUS partners will look elsewhere, and the window for Australian industry to own this capability space narrows.
